The Cross,
Self-Denial and the Manifestation of the Sons of God
The Cross, Self-Denial and the Manifestation of the Sons of God”
(102 pages, single spaced on-line edition) by Bill Nugent, an award winning Bible
teacher, is a very powerful, timely and much needed exposition of the Bible’s
teaching on the soon coming manifestation of the sons of God. The author is
aware that cults and others have abused the sonship message in the past. This
book brings much needed balance and conservative insight to this exciting aspect
of Bible prophecy. The book links the doctrine of the manifestation of the sons
of God with the doctrine of sanctification. Sanctification has to do with
self-denial. The Bible teaches that those who hang on to the self lose it but
those who deny self are raised up. Those who take up the cross daily (another
way of saying self-denial) are the ones who grow up to mature godly character
and will be released into manifestation of sonship in the end times.
This book is essential because it tackles very tough Bible passages on
sanctification without getting legalistic and because it handles the passages
regarding the manifested sons without getting elitist or overly speculative.
What follows is a short description of each chapter:
Chapter 1:
LEGALISM: THE SELF-LIFE IMITATION OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS
Legalism, the most common substitute for true sanctification, is defined; the
opposite extreme, antinomianism, is also defined and cautioned against. Thorough
explanation of how to flow in the Spirit to keep the commands contained in the
Gospels and the Epistles is given in this chapter.
Chapter 2:
LAYING DOWN THE SELF-LIFE
True, biblical self-denial is defined and explained. "Self" is defined. "Cross"
is defined. "Overcomer" is defined. Explanation is given as to how walking in
self-denial qualifies one to be an overcomer. Conservative treatment of the
"manifested sons" doctrine flows seamlessly from this chapter's teaching on
denial of self.
Chapter 3:
WHAT SELF-DENIAL IS NOT
Many biblical and unbiblical concepts and practices are often confused with
self-denial. These are defined and put in proper perspective. An explanation of
how some of these concepts and practices, though different from self-denial,
also contribute to the believer's growth is also given.
Chapter 4:
SELF-DENIAL IN TYPE AND SHADOW
A study of biblical types and shadows that pre-figure and shed light on the
concepts of self- denial, sanctification and the manifestation of the sons of
God.
Chapter 5:
THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION: TAKING UP THE CROSS DAILY
This chapter gives a very practical explanation of how to enter into the
experience of self-denial on a daily basis. How to pray the prayer of
consecration; how to take up one's cross daily; how to hear and obey God’s
voice; how daily entrance into consecration delivers us from all bondage is
explained.
Chapter 6:
THE PRACTICAL DAILY WALK OF AN OVERCOMER
How to walk as an overcomer. Analysis of the tension between non-resistance vs.
resistance to evil including an in-depth discussion of Matt 5:39 which commands
us to turn the other cheek and a discussion of Luke 22:36 which implies that
Christians are permitted to resist evil in some circumstances. How to overcome
evil with good. Practical outworking of sanctification and the necessity of
being led by the Holy Spirit.
Chapter 7:
THE MANIFESTATION OF THE SONS OF GOD
Exposition of Revelation chapter 12 and what it says regarding the sonship
message, the role of the manifested sons in the end of this age and during the
millennial reign of Christ is given. This chapter gives a balanced treatment of
Bible prophecies relevant to the sonship message. An exciting future awaits
those who deny self and therefore can be entrusted by God with much power to do
great works that will glorify Him.
